Something Sweet…

October 12th, 2010 by Jane

My husband loves macadamia nuts. His parents gave a jar of them to him and his sister every year as a stocking stuffer at Christmas when they were growing up. Sometimes they still do.

So, when we got married, I bought a jar of the roasted Hawaiian nuts for Christmas morning. On a trip to Sam’s Club that first year, I found a large box of CHOCOLATE COVERED macadamia nuts. Eureka! A little something extra for him! He kissed me on Christmas morning and told me how thoughtful it was of me.

Chocolate covered macadamia nuts became a holiday tradition. We had a tradition!

When we had been married about 14 years, I mentioned that the chocolated covered nuts were scarce that year. My husband said, “You don’t have to get me any. It’s okay.”

“No, no” I said. “I get them every year, I’ll keep looking.”

He said, “No, really. You don’t have to get them.”

“But you like them so much,” I replied.

“No, I don’t. I don’t like them at all.”

“What?! ┬áBut you eat them every year.”

“No, I don’t,” he said.

“Then who does?” I asked, incredulous.

“You do,” he said, with only the hint of a smirk.

HA! Everytime I see macadamia nuts my mind takes me back to your in-law’s house on Mulberry in the mid-1970s. His folks always seemed to have a jar sitting out, so I popped one in my mouth…which was immediately followed by another (they’re sooo good), then another, and pretty soon the jar was almost gone.

The next time I was over, your hubby told me that his mom declared macadamia nuts off limits to visiting kids (specifically those who had my name and lived at my address). It wasn’t until later that I realized how dang expensive they are for even a little jar.

A few years later, they similarly forbade me to drink beer in their house…but that’s a whole ‘nother story.

I think the parents in the beer story are mine! ;) Next time you come over, I’ll have a beer and a whole jar of macadamias just for you!

…and I apologized to your folks “on behalf of the entire senior class” for that one, I believe. The story I was referring to happened a couple of years earlier, after Woody Bombay and I persuaded your SIL to buy us some beer…unfortunately, the empty cans were left on the kitchen counter and the grandparents popped by the next morning. BUS-TED.

If I see a link of venison sausage, I think of your folks’ house. ;)

That will make my dad so happy. And they don’t hold a grudge! Hugs to you and yours.

I am having flash backs to having to clean up after those parties. Now it is Mom who eats all the macadamia nuts! The story is making me miss you all. Love to everyone.
